In the Landsraad Imperium, space travel is the number one most valued commodity. Without access to trade, transport or travel between planets, the empire encompassing the known universe would hold no utility and would crumble instantly. After the Butlerian Jihad lead a crusade to destroy and ban the creation of all thinking machines, AI and computers were no longer an option to calculate the complexities of wormhole space travel. Against all odds, the empire found a way. The hallucinogenic spice Melange found in abundance only on the planet Arrakis was found to have mind expanding properties beyond anything humanity had ever considered possible. Not only did the spice produce abilities such as prescience, telepathy, and even telekinesis in high enough doses, but in massive quantities can cause physical mutation into beings with a high enough mental capacity to calculate interstellar travel with near total perfection. This created the Spacing Guild, who without contest became the most powerful and influential group in the known universe. A single Guild Navigator holds more authority than the emperor himself, despite being limited to their tanks of spice infused gas, swimming around like fish in a field of levitation. Due to this advancement, the spice Melange catapulted to become the most valuable substance in the known universe and human history in general. A single kilogram of spice is worth more in every currency than the modern value of an equal amount of gold, oil, diamonds or cocaine combined.

They say you can tell a lot about the cultural zeitgeist by topical trends in Hollywood. I’ve noticed a lot of environmental fears this year.
